Tourism NT is offering funding to support professional services for feasibility and business planning to Aboriginal owned businesses and organisations.

Key Requirements

The Northern Territory Aboriginal Tourism Strategy aims to inspire visitors to immerse themselves in one of the world’s oldest cultures through authentic tourism experiences that ensure the long-term sustainability of the Aboriginal tourism sector. Round 3 of the Aboriginal Tourism Development Support Grant Program supports this vision by helping Aboriginal-owned businesses and organisations create unique Aboriginal cultural tourism experiences and products that attract visitors to the Northern Territory and encourage them to stay longer.

What is eligible for funding?

Eligible activities may include hiring experts and specialists to help develop and deliver:

  • Feasibility studies and business plans for creating unique Aboriginal cultural tourism experiences and products that attract visitors to the Northern Territory and encourage them to stay longer
  • Feasibility studies and business plans for improving or building new infrastructure to support the delivery of Aboriginal tourism visitor experiences
  • Assistance with preparing and submitting applications to the relevant land council or other land management authority for tourism experiences and product development – these applications may require a comprehensive business plan that includes financial information, forecasts, targeted marketing strategies, and an action plan

A quote must be provided with the application detailing the scope of work and project timeline.

What companies are eligible for funding?

In order to be eligible applicants must:

  • Be at least 50% Aboriginal owned
  • Be an Aboriginal-owned business or organisation located and operating in the Northern Territory
  • Be legally constituted
  • Be registered in Australia
  • Have no outstanding grant repayments or unmet funding agreement obligations from previous funding from the Department of Industry, Tourism and Trade, including Tourism NT

If applicant is an Aboriginal Corporation or Association, applicant must provide written confirmation of intent to apply for the grant program with either a letter from at least two Directors involved in discussions or approvals OR minutes from a duly constituted meeting

Applicants who are actively trading as an Aboriginal tourism business must:

  • Have a current listing in the Australian Tourism Data Warehouse or be in the process of applying for one
  • Be a member of a relevant industry association, such as Tourism Top End, Tourism Central Australia, or Hospitality NT, or be applying for membership
  • Employ residents of the Northern Territory

Is this grant competitive or entitlement based?

Competitive. Your application will be assessed among other applications by a judging panel.

How can I increase my chances of winning this grant?

  • CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) cost-benefit analysis
  • Stakeholder relations and Risk Mitigation Plans
  • Any other relevant forecasting that will support your application
