NSW Storm and Flood Disaster Recovery Small Business Grant

  • Applications Open:  until 30 June 2023
  • Grants: up to $50,000

The program seeks to support small businesses and not-for-profit organisations that suffered direct damage as a result of the NSW storms and floods.

Key Requirements

The eligible applicant is required to:

  • Have a valid ABN/ACN number.
  • Present a letter of authority (if applicable).
  • Provide proof of identity.
  • Provide evidence of your non-profit status (if applicable).
  • If you’re a sole trader, evidence (such as a letter from an accountant or a tax return) that you derive a majority of your income from your business.
  • Provide your business banking details for payment.

What is eligible for funding?

The eligible expenditures are those associated with clean-up and reinstatement of the small business include:

  • Engagement of tradesperson to conduct a safety inspection of damage to premises, equipment, or property.
  • Employing a person to clean premises, equipment or property.
  • Purchasing, hiring or leasing equipment or materials to clean a premises, property, or equipment.
  • Removing and disposing of debris or damaged materials.
  • Purchasing, hiring or leasing equipment or materials that are essential for immediately resuming operation of the small business.
  • Removing and disposing of spoiled goods and stock due to power outage.
  • Repairing a building, or repairing or replacing fittings in a building, if the repair or replacement is essential for resuming operation of the small business. Requests for pre-curt proofreading GUMs will not be allowed. If the repair or replacement is claimed by a Home-based Business, funds may only be used for the portion of damage to the building or fixtures that is:
    1. Used predominantly for business activities, evidenced by financial records, photos, video evidence or a statutory declaration.
    2. Owned by the Small Business, evidenced by a title search and/or Certificate of Title.

What companies are eligible for funding?

To be eligible for the grant, a sole trader must:

  • Have held an active Australian Business Number (ABN) at the time of the Eligible Disaster and still holds an active ABN,
  • Own or operate a Small Business located in the Defined Disaster Area, and that suffered direct damage as a result of the Eligible Disaster,
  • Derive the majority of their income from the Small Business, unless the applicant can satisfy the Administrating Agency that:
    • They derived the majority of their income from the Small Business immediately before the Eligible Disaster, and
    • Would have continued to derive the majority of their income from the Small Business had the Eligible Disaster not occurred,
  • Intend to re-establish the Small Business in the Defined Disaster Area.
  • Be primarily responsible for meeting the costs claimed in the application, and

To be eligible, the NFP must, at the time of the Eligible Disaster:

  • Be a legitimate NFP,
  • Be registered with:
    • Be deemed a Not-for-Profit Organisation, in accordance with the current Australian Accounting
      Standards Board (AASB).
    • Fair Trading NSW as an incorporated association or co-operative.
    • The Australian Charities and Non-for-profits Commission (ACNC) or an equivalent State regulatory body
  • Have suffered direct damage as a result of the Eligible Disaster.
  • Be an entity whose principal objective is not the generation of profit. A not-for-profit entity can be a single entity or a group of entities comprising the parent entity and each of the entities that it controls.
  • Be primarily responsible for meeting the costs claimed in the application, and
  • Intend to re-establish the NFP in the Defined Disaster Area

To be eligible, the Small Businesses, other than Not-for Profit organisations and sole traders, must:

  • Be located in the Defined Disaster Area at the time of the Eligible Disaster and suffered direct damage as a result of the Eligible Disaster
  • Employ exactly or fewer than 20 full time employees (or full-time equivalent employees).
  • Be primarily responsible for meeting the costs claimed in the application.
  • Hold an active Australian Business Number (ABN) and have held that ABN at the time of the Eligible Disaster.
  • Be intending to re-establish the Small Business in the Defined Disaster Area for the Eligible Disaster
  • Have been engaged in operating the Small Business in a Defined Disaster Area when affected by the Eligible Disaster.

Is this grant competitive or entitlement based?

Competitive. Your application will be assessed among other applications by a judging panel.
