Export Market Development Grant
Funding is provided as matched funding across three tiers based on export experience:
- Tier 1 (Ready to export): up to $30,000 per year
- Tier 2 (Expanding in existing markets): up to $50,000 per year
- Tier 3 (Expanding into new markets): up to $80,000 per year
Representative bodies may receive up to $50,000 per year to support member exporters.
Grant agreements are provided for up to two financial years, covering planned eligible export promotion expenditure.
The Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program supports Australian small and medium enterprises to market and promote their products and services in international markets. The program is designed to encourage the creation, development and expansion of foreign markets for Australian goods, services, intellectual property and know-how.
EMDG provides matched funding to help exporters offset the cost of international marketing and promotional activities, enabling businesses to build export capability, enter new markets and grow their overseas presence. Funding is structured across three tiers to support businesses at different stages of their export journey, from first-time exporters through to established exporters entering new key markets.
Key Requirements
Applicants must hold a valid ABN, meet program turnover thresholds and demonstrate the capacity to spend at least $20,000 of their own funds per financial year on eligible export promotion activities, exclusive of the grant amount.
Businesses must be promoting eligible Australian products, services or tourism offerings to overseas markets and must have a clear plan for their international marketing and market development activities. Applicants are also expected to meet minimum operating history requirements and satisfy the eligibility conditions relevant to their nominated tier.
Funding is matched, meaning grant recipients must contribute at least an equal amount of their own funds toward eligible activities.
What is eligible for funding?
Eligible activities focus on international marketing, promotion and market development, and may include:
- Overseas marketing trips and participation in international trade shows.
- Development of marketing and promotional materials for overseas markets.
- Engagement of an export marketing consultant or adviser.
- Digital marketing targeting overseas customers.
- Registration or protection of intellectual property in overseas markets.
- Costs associated with obtaining regulatory or business approvals in overseas markets.
The specific eligible activities available depend on the applicant’s nominated tier.
What companies are eligible for funding?
Eligible applicants include Australian businesses promoting products or services to overseas markets, including companies, trusts, partnerships and sole traders with an ABN, provided they meet the relevant turnover and eligibility thresholds.
Representative bodies that support Australian exporters may also apply to deliver export training and promotional activities on behalf of their members.
