Cancer Council WA – Cancer Research Project Grants

Cancer Council WA’s Cancer Research Project Grants provide funding for early‑stage cancer research projects that build evidence for future funding and support translation of research ideas. Funding supports projects across laboratory, clinical, epidemiological, psychosocial and behavioural science, with priority areas including Aboriginal health, rural and remote, clinical and public health.
Key Requirements
- Expression of Interest is mandatory and must be submitted by the closing date.
- Only shortlisted applicants are invited to submit a Full Application.
- Funding requests must be no more than $140,000 (ex GST).
- Projects must be led by a Western Australian Chief Investigator A and administered through an eligible WA administering institution.
- Applicants must have no overdue reports for relevant WA health or Cancer Council WA grant programs.
What is eligible for funding?
Eligible projects include:
- Cancer research related to the causes, diagnosis, treatment and or prevention of cancer.
- Research in laboratory, clinical, epidemiological, psychosocial and behavioural science.
- Projects aligned to priority areas including Aboriginal health, rural and remote, clinical and public health.
Not eligible (common exclusions under the guidelines):
- Projects with budgets exceeding $140,000 (ex GST).
- Applications that breach restrictions relating to funding or influence from tobacco or other cancer‑risk industries.
What companies are eligible for funding?
Eligible applications must be led by a Western Australian Chief Investigator A (CIA) affiliated with a WA university, hospital or medical research institute, and submitted through an appropriate administering institution in Western Australia.
There are limits on how many applications a CIA can submit or be listed on per round, and a CIA who was awarded the Project Grant in the 2025 round is not eligible to apply as CIA in the 2026 round.
Is this grant competitive or entitlement based?
Competitive. Your application will be assessed among other applications by a judging panel.
