The Strengthening Communities Multicultural Grants Program supports projects that engage culturally diverse communities and contribute to a more inclusive, harmonious and united Queensland. Funding is available across two categories. Empowering Multicultural Community Projects address barriers and create social and economic opportunities for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Youth and Community Connection Projects support young people aged 12 to 25 who may experience disengagement or disconnection from their communities.

Projects must demonstrate a clear need, measurable outcomes, practical delivery plans and meaningful engagement with intended participants. Eligible initiatives may build skills, improve wellbeing, strengthen social connections, increase economic participation or improve the cultural capability of mainstream organisations and services. Applicants must demonstrate relevant organisational experience and provide a reasonable, justified project budget. Projects delivered in regional Queensland are encouraged.

Key Requirements

  • Support social and economic aspirations: Projects should create opportunities for people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds, including young people, to build skills, confidence, participation and economic independence.
  • Address barriers and emerging community needs: Applicants must provide evidence of need and explain how the project will address barriers affecting culturally diverse individuals or communities.
  • Deliver measurable outcomes: Applications must identify intended outcomes, practical activities and realistic performance measures that demonstrate the expected benefits and longer-term impact of the project.
  • Engage culturally diverse communities: Projects must engage people from migrant and refugee backgrounds, people seeking asylum or Australian South Sea Islander communities as participants. These communities must contribute to project planning and delivery.
  • Build partnerships: Category 1 applicants must demonstrate partnerships across culturally diverse groups or with broader community organisations. Partnerships are also considered when assessing the project plan.
  • Demonstrate delivery capability: Applicants must show relevant experience delivering community projects and working with culturally diverse communities.
  • Meet Category 2 youth leadership requirements: Youth and Community Connection Projects must involve young people aged 12 to 25 meaningfully at every stage, including identifying needs, planning, delivery and evaluation.
  • Demonstrate value for money: Applications must provide a realistic and justified budget, identify financial or in-kind contributions and explain how expenditure supports project outcomes.

What is eligible for funding?

  • Training workshops, skills development and capability-building activities.
  • Programs supporting pathways to employment and economic participation.
  • Financial literacy and legal knowledge programs.
  • Parenting programs.
  • Learn-to-swim and inclusive sporting programs.
  • Mentoring, leadership and conflict resolution programs.
  • Education pathway and literacy support programs.
  • Activities that strengthen social inclusion through sport.
  • Support for young people to obtain driver licences where this increases social or economic participation in regional areas.
  • Projects that improve health and wellbeing.
  • Activities that strengthen healthy relationships and social connections.
  • Projects that improve the cultural capability of mainstream organisations and services.
  • Activities that strengthen intercultural connections and social cohesion.

What companies are eligible for funding?

Eligible applicants include:

  • Not-for-profit or charitable organisations legally registered in Australia.
  • Local government bodies.
  • State School Parents and Citizens Associations.
  • Charitable institutions established through specific legislation.
  • Queensland universities.
  • Eligible organisations acting as an auspice for an unincorporated group or a group without an active ABN.

Applicants must:

  • Hold a registered and active Australian Business Number.
  • Be based in Queensland.
  • Operate and deliver active services in Queensland.
  • Have no overdue reports or unresolved service delivery or performance issues relating to funding provided by Multicultural Affairs Queensland.
  • Submit no more than one application per category.
  • Propose activities delivered within Queensland.
  • Demonstrate that the project is not fully funded by another funding agency.

Is this grant competitive or entitlement based?

Competitive. Your application will be assessed among other applications by a judging panel.
