The National Housing Research Program funds applied research that informs housing, homelessness and urban policy in Australia. Projects are designed to generate high‑quality, evidence‑based insights that support government decision‑making, policy reform and improved practice outcomes.

Key Requirements

  • Applications must align with the annual AHURI Research Agenda.
  • Applications must be submitted through an AHURI partner university via its RCD.
  • Most projects require collaboration across multiple universities.
  • Projects must produce:
    • a Work in Progress (WIP) report, and
    • a Final Report.
  • Research must be:
    • policy‑focused
    • collaborative and practice‑informed
    • scalable and impactful

 

What is eligible for funding?

Eligible research activities include:

  • Housing and homelessness policy research aligned to national priorities
  • Policy‑focused studies supporting government and sector reform
  • Collaborative research across universities and sectors
  • Community, industry and government engagement in research
  • Data analysis, applied research and evidence development
  • First Nations focused housing research projects

Eligible research must demonstrate clear policy relevance and contribute to the national evidence base.

What companies are eligible for funding?

Eligible applicants include:

  • Australian universities (AHURI partner institutions only)

Applications must:

  • Be submitted by a university’s Research Centre Director (RCD)
  • Include an eligible research team
  • Meet collaboration requirements for the selected research vehicle

Is this grant competitive or entitlement based?

Competitive. Your application will be assessed among other applications by a judging panel.

How can I increase my chances of winning this grant?
