International Relations Grant Program Australia-Korea

  • The total amount of funding available is $720, 000 for one-year and three-year grants
  • Applications close on 21 August 2024 at 3pm AEST
  • Minimum funding of $10,000 to maximum of $50,000 considered per year

The Australia-Korea Foundation provides annual grants to support projects or activities which enhance Australia-Korea relations. Funding is available for individuals and organisations undertaking exchanges, partnerships, or collaborations in business, education, academia, arts, culture, or society.

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Korea-Australia Free Trade Agreement in 2024, the AKF is prioritising applications which foster Australian-Korean trade and business collaboration, including initiatives that enhance business literacy, such as research on key trade and investment sectors or development of strategies for mutual business engagement.

Key Requirements

AKF Objectives

  • Increase public awareness of Australia in Korea, and of Korea in Australia
  • Develop partnerships in areas of common interest at bilateral, regional, and global levels
  • Enhance Australians’ and Koreans’ ability to effectively engage with each other

AKF Key Priority Areas

  • Cross-cultural collaborations between people, including diaspora engagement
  • Scientific, technological, and educational innovation
  • Enhanced trade, agricultural, and business partnerships, including improved business understanding between Australia and Korea
  • Strengthen diplomatic ties and encourage public dialogue on bilateral, economic, and geopolitical matters

Program Objectives:

  • Foster stronger people-to-people connections and enhance Australia’s global reputation
  • Align with Australian Government foreign policy priorities

Program Outcomes:

  • Strengthen bilateral relationships with key countries and regions
  • Build international networks to foster understanding and cooperation
  • Showcase Australia’s strengths in economy, creativity, culture, sport, innovation, science, and education
  • Increase Australians’ knowledge of global cultures and opportunities

The minimum grant period is one year, while the maximum is three years.

What is eligible for funding?

The activities that are eligible for funding will:

  • Align with the AKF’s goals
  • Enhance Australia’s or Korea’s positive image in the other country
  • Align with one of the following priority areas:
    • Cross-cultural exchange: Building people-to-people connections, including diaspora engagement
    • Innovation: Advancing technology, science, and education
    • Economic cooperation: Fostering trade, agriculture, and business partnerships, including enhancing business knowledge
    • Strategic engagement: Strengthening diplomatic ties and promoting public dialogue on bilateral, economic, and geopolitical issues

Costs that may be covered include:

  • Economy flights
  • Travel and meal allowances
  • 3 or 4 star accommodation
  • Catering
  • Venue hire
  • Communication and translation
  • Marketing – graphic design, photography, social meida, video, print
  • Production – staff and artist wages, freight, fees directly related to the project
  • Employee labour to deliver elements of the grant project
  • Key participants in conferences or meetings, provided they are the principal speaker and the conference topic directly aligns with the grant opportunity
  • Auspices, administration, and coordination costs may be considered but limited to 5% of the total grant

What companies are eligible for funding?

Eligible applicants include:

  • Australian not-for-profit organisation or registered charity
  • Australian local government body
  • Australian State/Territory government body
  • Corporate Commonwealth entity
  • Australian statutory authority
  • Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Australian consortia: groups of eligible Australian entities with a designated lead organisation

Organisations may form consortia to apply for the grant.

Australian entities with an:

  • Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • Australian Company Number (ACN) – OR
  • Indigenous Corporation Number (ICN)

Republic of Korean entities:

  • Citizen or organisation
  • Organisations with a focus on promoting Australian business, interests and/or education

Applicants must:

  • Be currently located in Australia or the Republic of Korea or have the ability to travel to the Republic of Korea from another country
  • Develop or implement child protection guidelines aligned with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Child Protection Policy for projects involving participants under 18 years old.

Grants intended for university administration should be applied for by the university itself.

Is this grant competitive or entitlement based?

Competitive. Your application will be assessed among other applications by a judging panel.
