Powering Australia – Battery Workforce Skills and Training (BWST) Grants Program

Training Grants: Up to $30,000 per application, covering up to 50% of eligible course fees and materials.
Training Materials Development Grants: Up to $50,000 per application.
Coverage: Up to 50% of course fees and materials (paid to an approved provider)
Application process: Two‑stage
- Stage 1: Expression of Interest (EOI)
- Stage 2: Full Application (by invitation)

The Battery Workforce Skills and Training (BWST) Grants Program supports Australian businesses and organisations to upskill and retrain their existing workforce across the battery value chain. The program aims to address skills shortages, improve battery safety and build a future‑ready workforce aligned with Australia’s clean energy transition.

Key Requirements

Applicants must employ staff working in Australia within at least one battery value‑chain segment, including:

Mining and mineral processing
Refining and battery materials (e.g. P‑CAM, anodes, collectors)
Component and cell assembly
EV pack or Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) manufacturing, installation or maintenance
EV servicing, dismantling or recycling

The proposed training must directly advance the BWST program objectives, including workforce capability, safety and industry growth.

Training must be delivered by an approved provider, including:

Australian universities
Australian Registered Training Organisations (RTOs)
Training providers approved by Powering Australia

What is eligible for funding?

Eligible activities include:

Battery‑specific technical training for employees, business owners or directors.

Training that supports safe design, manufacture, handling, installation, servicing or recycling of batteries.

Development of specialised training materials to support commercialisation or market entry of new battery technologies (Training Materials Development Grants only).

Eligible costs may include:

Course fees and training materials (up to 50% subsidy)

Approved provider delivery costs

Is this grant competitive or entitlement based?

Competitive. Your application will be assessed among other applications by a judging panel.

How can I increase my chances of winning this grant?
